About MC

MC is a metropolitan house of culture for storytellers. Founded as a theater workshop with its roots in the diaspora and its ear to the street, MC theater has blossomed into a unique international venue for live time-based arts and events. A home for new stories in the old city of Amsterdam.

The MC theater is a facility housing three performance spaces and a restaurant, Toko MC. Located in Amsterdam’s new cultural hotspot, the WesterGasFabriek Cultuurpark,  MC theater  hosts theater performances, concerts, club-nights, viewings, workshops, conferences and art exhibits. It is a testimony to MC’s artistic mission: to be at the cutting edge of Europe's new cultural identity. MC’s founders, Marjorie Boston, Maarten van Hinte and Lucien Kembel, pioneered urban theater in the Netherlands. They are a product of today's multi-ethnic, multicultural urban Europe, and it is reflected in their performances, the people they work with, and in how they associate with their audience. For each project, their core artistic team involves guests from different disciplines: actors, directors, artists, dj’s, musicians, writers, dancers, rappers, painters, computer programmers, designers, young and old. This approach has allowed MC to generate and present an amazing network of new creative talent, as well as bring a more diverse and younger audience to the theater.

Diversity is the key word in MC’s music programming as well. Artists like Lianne La Havas, Cody Chestnutt, Theo Parrish, Jose James, The Last Poets, Dam Funk, Adrian Younge, Bugge Wesseltoft and Toro y Moi amongst others have performed at MC, some of which have given  workshops and masterclasses to emerging artists in our network. This is part of our vision: not just programming artists and performers, but opening up a real conversation about what they do and why. Connecting masters with diamonds in the rough.
